Reflections of an R35 ESL volunteer - Sam Swartz shares his experience:

"Six months was not enough. Back at home in North Carolina, looking at pictures from Thailand, that is the conclusion I come to. Originally, I was only slated to stay for three, but then I bought an umbrella and sent a letter..." Read More
My students surprised me with thank you cards for the time I spent teaching them. I was incredibly moved by their words and will miss them deeply.

(“Miss Aly, I would like to thank you for everything! I am now smarter than I was before. I will never forget you and I hope that you will never forget us students at R35. Good luck in life. I will wait for you to come again.”)

The ISB Tsunami Relief Network at the International School Bangkok sponsors the R35 ESL Experience program. They are located in Bangkok and provide in-country support for the volunteers. They also assist in the volunteer recruitment process and are accountable for all project expenditures.

Marti Anderson is the volunteer coordinator and is responsible for recruiting, interviewing and selecting ESL volunteers. Marti also works on the curriculum, updates the teacher's manual and collects materials for the English lessons.

The ESL volunteers teach English to all students at the 35th Rajaprajanugroh school. Their volunteer time in Thailand can range anywhere from 5 months to a year or longer.  Once there, the ESL volunteers enjoy themselves tremendously. They are creative and self-motivated people who come up with their own ideas for improving the program. Sometimes, the volunteers like it so much that they refuse to leave when their time is up. This month, three volunteers have decided to stay on longer.
